It is our hope to enhance the relationship between secondary school and University students, as well as to enhance students’ awareness towards social issues through this mentorship program. University students can act as leaders to engage secondary students into discussions and team games, which on the one hand builds the leadership skills and confidence of University students, and on the other hand enhances secondary students’ communication skills and critical thinking while discussing different issues.
Through this program, we realized that most secondary students lacked confidence in expressing themselves. Yet, they were willing to give a try after being encouraged. We also discovered that each of them had their talents and areas of interests, which should be encouraged for further development. In addition, we learned that well preparation was very important, such as prior understanding of participants’ abilities and areas of interests would be of help in selection of discussion topics.
