With Love, We Hold Our Hands – International Service Trip to Hunan Baojing

Target
Empty nesters and left-behind children
Working Partner
Baojing County, Xiangxi Prefecture, Hunan Province
Introduction

Due to the income gap between rural areas and cities, migrant workers in Baojing County have no choice
but to work in other cities in order to earn a living. This leads to the problems of empty nesters and leftbehind children. By visiting the rural villages, teaching and carrying out programmes for the elderly and
children, we hope to send our care and love to them. Roses given, fragrance in hand. It is expected that the
trip was not only to broaden our horizons but also enable us to reflect on ourselves and think deeper about
the meaning of life.

Reflection and Learning

The service trip provided us with another angle to view and think about the poverty in rural areas of
Mainland China. Before the service trip, we only knew their situation by books or media. After the trip, we
were able to know them better through our eyes. Although they lacked affluent material life, they never
blamed others and lived positively. We learnt to treasure what we already had. Their persistency and attitude
towards life gave us the motivation to do more and better to serve the underprivileged. We understood one
of the most essential elements of service trip was to put ourselves into others’ shoes. Only by this way, we
could serve with care and respect and benefit them the most. On the other hand, taking the lead or being part of the team trained our leadership skills to cooperate and work with others. All in all, we learnt a lot through the service trip.
