Given that community support for students with special educational needs (SEN) is mostly focused on academics, our team aims to focus on their diverse development and mental well-being. Therefore, we are organizing different workshops in a relaxed and fun way to allow SEN students to explore different interests and develop their potential, supporting their holistic development.
We also hope that through these activities, SEN students can meet peers with similar experiences, find partners to struggle with on the learning journey, and learn from and encourage each other during the sharing sessions. At the same time, we hope that by providing training to university student volunteers and allowing them to interact with SEN students in the workshops, they can gain a deeper understanding of SEN and dispel previous misconceptions, thereby promoting social inclusion.
During the activities, we realised that student SEN is not as labelled by society. In fact, they are not very different from regular students. We hope to work together with society to provide more support for students with special needs, beyond just academics. At the same time, through the various activities, we learned how to communicate and dialogue more effectively with students with special needs, understand their difficulties in life, and listen to their needs.
