Given the constraints of limited resources and time in local schools, as well as the prevalence of the tutoring culture in Hong Kong, grassroots students may not always have access to the necessary resources and learning opportunities. Drawing from our own experiences of coming from a grassroots background and receiving support from generous individuals in society, we are committed to leveraging the resources at our disposal and spreading the message of equitable education. Our goal is to give back to society by supporting students in need, offering free educational services, and providing a range of learning activities tailored to the needs of grassroots students. Our aim is to enhance their learning motivation, offer emotional support, and empower them to reach their full potential.
During my two years in university, being a student sometimes left me feeling lost and frustrated. It's often said that among the "5 Things to do in U-life", there must be "work," and most university students choose part-time jobs like tutoring. Perhaps due to family circumstances or just the influence around me, I naturally opted for tutoring to enrich my life. However, tutoring gradually made me more utilitarian; the motivation to get up every day was just for money, which was indeed frustrating and burdensome, leading to a sense of pain. So, I wanted to try this free education program, hoping to see what I could gain without the motivation of making money.
Over four days of activities, along with more than two months of preparation, I invested most of my time and energy into designing engaging, meaningful, and valuable activities. Yet, I felt no pain and didn't calculate various monetary benefits. Especially during the four days, from setting up the venue, preparing materials, leading the activities, and overseeing everything, to tidying up afterward, reflecting on our performance, and preparing for the next day's activities, I maintained at least 10 hours of intense focus each day. Although I slept less than five hours, I was already up and ready before the alarm rang. The tight schedule over those four days didn't feel exhausting at all; rather, I became increasingly excited and engaged. This was all thanks to my team's dedication and the radiant smiles of the participating students, which made the plan successful beyond expectations. I firmly believe that this joy and satisfaction are priceless, something that can never be quantified in monetary terms, and it became the best reason to wake up to the sound of my alarm.
