Professor Qin Ling from the Faculty of Medicine joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1994, and was appointed as Choh-Ming Li Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in January this year. Professor Qin's undergraduate, master and PhD are all related to sports science.
Talking about the reason for choosing Orthopaedic and Traumatology as his major, Professor Qin said that he likes sports since he was a child, but it is difficult to avoid injuries in sports, he has also suffered from fracture in an international skiing competition. Sports medicine can help the injured to recover and athletes to return to the pre-injury state. After the injured recovers, the metal traditionally used for fixing the fracture has to be removed from the body, but this is even a heavier psychological burden compared to the surgery for trauma repair. Professor Qin’s personal experience developed his research interest in avoiding the traditional procedures and invented a magnesium fixation that can decompose in the human body.
Making scientific and clinically meaningful inventions is the source of Professor Qin’s satisfaction, but he also encountered various difficulties in the research process. As product research involves different professional knowledge, and Hong Kong lacks regulatory agencies for newly invented products or enterprises of medical machinery manufacture, Professor Qin needs to cooperate with many parties inside and outside Hong Kong to realise the invention. Luckily, there are more solutions than difficulties. CUHK established a Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Technology Research Institute as a platform to support research work with funds and encourage industrialization of products. Professor Qin also serves as the Director of CUHK SZ-HK Innovation Technology Research Institute (Futian).
Recalling his connection with Shaw College, Professor Qin said that he was assigned by the University as a member of Shaw College. Professor Qin had been a member in the Sports and Recreation Committee. He always played tennis in the tennis court of Shaw College and had participated in Vice-Chancellor's Cup and College Head’s Cup, winning the championship and first-runner-up. He looks forward to College Head’s Cup after Covid-19 pandemic.
